Morning Prayer

Psalms 124, 125 and 126

If it had not been for the Lord the enemy forces would have attacked and overwhelmed us like a flood. Blessed be the Lord. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Those who trust in God shall never be moved. God will surround and support us. The psalmist prays for blessing on the faithful and that evil be kept away from us.

When we are restored we are full of joy and praise and others notice that our God has done great things for us. So we ask to be restored, that those in tears reap joy and those who weep and sow seeds come back with an abundant harvest.

Genesis 39

Joseph is put in service in Pharaoh’s house and does well. He progresses to be in charge of the entire household and the Pharaoh’s household is blessed because of Joseph. Pharaoh’s wife wrongly accuses Joseph of sexual harassment and he is put in prison. Here again Joseph progresses to be in charge of all the prisoners and their care. Everything Joseph does is successful because the Lord is with him.

Luke 11: 14 – 28

Jesus heals a mute person. The crowds question whether he is doing this as a more powerful evil force. Jesus talks about a house divided not being able to stand. He also talks about the removal of evil and being made clean but the trial can return and be harder. A woman blesses Jesus’ mother because of his work and he counters saying that everyone who hears the word of God and obeys is blessed.

God of wonders and God of grace, when we return to you, you clear out our sins, makes clean our hearts, come to us, guide us and assist us to do your work. Help us today to do our internal housework: to pray, to read, to think on you, so that no dust or dross can enter and so that we are blessed and our lives reflect the power of your love and grace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalms 127, 128 and 129

Unless the Lord is with us in what we do our labour is in vain. Rising early, working late and being anxious about things are not part of God’s plan.

Those who walk with God are blessed to have the freedom to eat our own produce, prosperity sufficient for women to be creative and children to flourish. It is a blessing to see our grandchildren.

God has preserved us from all assaults in the past. The psalmist asks that those who are enemies of God not prevail.

Jeremiah 25: 1 – 17

Jeremiah prophesies that Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon will overtake Judah and Jerusalem. The destruction is the consequence of not following Gods commands and not listening to the prophets. In turn, Babylon and the other nations will fall.

Hebrews 3: 1 – 15

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden you hearts as in the rebellion.” Moses was like the Chief of God’s household and faithful. Jesus is God’s son and we are in his house. So, we are not to be like those who turned against Moses. We are to stay faithful to our hope: Christ.

Loving and compassionate God, you know that in this world bad things happen to good people. You remind us too that when we are with you and part of your household we need not fear, no matter what the world throws at us. Hold us in your grace, guide us when we are lost and puzzled and keep us from all harm, today and forever through your dear Son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
